The Tower of Babylon
There is one well known story described in Genesis 11:3-4 " 3 They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."" (TNIV). The basic idea looks like this (standard description in the literature): people have become too bold and decided to construct a tower up to the sky, to take hold of the sky or just simply to show themselfes and to remain in memory of millions... A god was scared of changes in authority and divided languages for that they couldn’t reach him (I write "god" from the small letter since the history is silly and does not match the real Almighty God). Such treatment has seemed to me doubtful, and I have decided to dig more deeply.
In Hebrew "a tower that reaches to the heavens" sounds as "... migeddal werosho beshshamaim ...", that means "... A tower and its head in the sky..." This case occurred in Babylon, which since olden days was famous for two towers-ziggurats named Esagila and Etemenanki. " E " in Sumerian means "temple", "sag" – “head”, and "il (u)" - akkadized word "an", that means "sky". Thus the main object of worship in Babylon had a name " a temple (tower) " a head of the sky " ". Also the archaeology does not find some other towers there... So it is necessary to choose from present ones...
One more point: the word "name" in Hebrew means object of worship, instead of process of being pride of yourself, as in the western civilization. If we put all these facts together we can have such a picture: after a flood people have dried up, then greatly multiplied (Nimrod, the fourth generation after Noah, was the first Lord in Babylon (chapter 10), it is 300-400 years after a flood, considering, that then they lived long and gave birth to children late, in addition Nimrod had to grow up till that moment), already had something built, and decided to create a name for themselves for worship. Unfortunately, it was not the name of That God Which has created them and fed. From now on the system of pagan beliefs has been created and the first cult construction (not important how tall it was, focus is in the name, instead of being in size) is constructed. It both has upset the God, and has served the reason, instead of "fear of poor little deity for his power" for disbandment of this primitive collective...
At first sight the idea is simple, but has demanded about a year of studying...
For the beginning
Hello! Today I start my first blog. Thanks to Tim Brinley, pastor in Church of Christ in Moscow, he gave me an idea to share my thoughts and discoveries this way.
In brief about me. My name is Mikhail Zhernokleyev, I'm 37, born in Moscow, lived in many places from Russian Far East to Geneva, Switzerland, from Moscow, Russia to Antalya, Turkey. For the moment I live in Antalya for a year and hope to live here much more...
I have an education of economist but in my heart have always been a historian. Since I was 12, I dreamed to investigate the history of Mayas in Mexico but the life turned for me to join a quite different institute. When I was 21 I believed in God and Christ as the Lord and since that time I'm very much interested in learning Bible history. For more than 15 years I was trying to examine what it was really like in the Bible. I was studying Sumer history and some essential points of language, Assyrian and Babylonian history, trying to become familiar with Ancient Greek and Hebrew. Since we moved to Turkey it became very comfortable to investigate Minor Asian history in general and in context of Apostle Paul's deeds. My goal is to see for myself and to show for others how it all happened, what was the place, conditions, climate, background etc. in order to understand better Bible hero's actions and motivations. For this point see my site.
During this time of studies I've had some discoveries that I'd like to share with you. They may seem naif for somebody but if it helps someone in their understanding of the Bible I would be glad.
